Personal Development: Multibillion-Dollar Industry

Need to lose weight? Control your emotions? Want to keep motivated and deliver powerful speech? The answers are all readily available in personal-development marketplace.

According to statistics from Marketdata research firm, self-improvement market worth an estimated $9.6 billion in 2005. It grew more than 24% from 2003 to 2005. The firm projects that the industry will continue skyrocketing at 11.4% rate to reach $13.9 billion in 2010.

"Now more than ever, people are turning to gurus for help in a variety of areas," says John LaRosa, Research Director of Marketdata, about the self-improvement market. "They want to be more in control of their emotional and financial lives."

Around $696 million worth of self-improvement books were sold in 2005. Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad has been on the New York Times Best Seller list for several years straight and has sold more than 20 million copies. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey has sold more than 15 million copies in 38 languages troughout the world. Online courses, audio CDs, DVDs, workshops and seminars are also incresingly popular channels.

Clearly, people are interested in bettering themselves through self-help and personal development. The key to personal development is finding out which method works best for you. Since you are the one investing time and money in these programs, it makes sense to consider what will be the most effective use of your resources.
